We are a global organization that has a core duty to protect people who are forcibly displaced due to violence, persecution, war or disaster at home. Our job is to save lives and build better futures for millions of people who lost everything.
To protect and support people of concern, UNHCR provides protection, shelter and emergency relief in addition to ongoing humanitarian aid through long term programmes covering health, education, livelihood support, cash-based intervention and skills training.

Protection

Registration
Registration and identification of refugees is key for the people concerned
When people are forced to flee their homes to escape war, persecution or violence, the registration and documentation by States or by UNHCR is a key first step in ensuring their protection.
Shelter
We provide shelter to those who need it most
A central part of our protection mission is to guarantee adequate shelter in humanitarian emergencies.
Food and Water
We strive to improve the nutritional status of the displaced wherever we can
Ensuring that people have access to adequate nutrient-rich food and safe water is essential for protecting the safety, health and well-being of millions of people who have been forced to flee.
Health, Medical & Psychosocial Support
We strive to ensure that all people forced to flee have access to life-saving healthcare
Health and psychosocial support are delivered with an emphasis on primary health care and support for secondary hospital care. This can include HIV prevention, protection and treatment, reproductive health services, water, sanitation and hygiene services.
Livelihoods & Cash-Based Interventions
We work to promote livelihoods and support the economic inclusion of refugees
We collaborate with a wide range of partners, enhancing economic outcomes for refugees as well as host communities.
Education
We work to ensure thousands of refugee and displaced children can go to school
We work with partners to ensure quality protective education for refugee children and young people everywhere.
Durable Solutions
Our ultimate goal is to find solutions that allow refugees to rebuild their lives again
Finding solutions that enable refugees to live their lives in dignity and peace is a core part of our work. Options for durable solutions for refugees include voluntary repatriation, resettlement and integration.
We strive to ensure that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge.
During times of displacement, we provide critical emergency assistance.
We also arrange transport and assistance packages for people who return home, and income-generating projects for those who resettle.
