Over 1.5 million Afghans have returned in 2025 — more than 1 million from Iran alone. Once forced to leave everything behind and flee, thousands of refugee families have come back to their homeland with nothing once more. The future is gravely uncertain, especially for women and girls returning from Iran and Pakistan.
On July 1st, 2025, over 43,000 people crossed from Iran on a single day.
These numbers are real people – families arriving exhausted after travelling in extreme heat and difficult conditions. They are hungry and afraid, not knowing what the future holds. UNHCR is on the ground, providing safe spaces, psychosocial support, meals and emergency aid, but we cannot do it alone.
Amid the extreme global funding cuts, UNHCR’s response in Afghanistan is only 28% funded, and we cannot sustain this support for more than a few weeks.
Today, your donation can make a real difference, helping provide emergency shelter, relief items, hot meals and financial assistance, and helping protect the dignity of the most vulnerable, especially women, girls and children.
As they struggle to deal with the unimaginable, help Afghan families rebuild their lives with dignity and strength.
