COVID-19 does not discriminate. Refugees are at the same risk of contracting and transmitting the virus as local populations. However, over 80% of the global refugee population and nearly all of world’s internally displaced people are hosted in low to middle-income countries, which have weaker health and water and sanitation systems, and often find themselves in overcrowded places. These vulnerable people need our help now more than ever.
UNHCR is working on delivering its part to prevent and respond to the COVID-19 outbreak among refugee and displaced communities, mainly by ensuring adequate access to clean water, hygiene supplies and waste disposal, and by providing information on hygiene measures.
As we approach Ramadan, millions of refugees will receive the holy month in poor conditions due to the ongoing pandemic. We are working tirelessly to continue providing vulnerable families with their basic needs but UNHCR can’t do this alone, we also need the support of each and everyone one of you.
